With this $10 set of detailed instructions and drawings and one afternoon, you can build a custom rack to carry one or two 10' - 18' kayaks on a pickup. This rack went together for about $40, and it hauls our two 15+ foot, 54 pound flat water boats. They load and unload easily, and ride smoothly at highway speeds. For other trips, I haul a pair of 17 foot sea kayaks, about 44 pounds each, and they ride like they're not even up there. "....we just completed our kayak rack. It is GREAT... Your instructions were detailed enough for someone like us with no experience to build it. I highly recommend the purchase of your instructions to anyone." - smithfd (Ebay) Here's the story. For years we hauled our boats in an old van - stacked them in the back and propped the rear doors open. Easy system, but not too smart. Then we bought a pickup. No problem, I thought... there's plenty of racks around. True, but after checking them out, most were bulky, permanent installations priced at $300 to $600, out of budget for me. Plus, it had to be lightweight and easy to install, remove and store, so the truck could be used for other things. So, I spent some time in the shop and built a prototype to fit MY BOATS, MY TRUCK, and MY NEEDS. It took some trial and error, a little experimenting, and many trips to the Depot, but the finished rack does everything I want. It will adapt to almost any pickup with stake pockets, and with a little modification, it could work for a light canoe. You may be surprised to know it's mostly wood constructed, with steel at critical stress points. Why wood? Because it's perfect for the job. The light load requirements simply don't justify welded steel, aluminum, or other heavy material or permanent designs. Wood is light weight, strong, readily available, easily worked and customized, and no special skills or tools are needed. Remember, just a few years ago every pickup came with stake pockets... yes, designed for wood stakes to support side boards or a home built ladder rack. This is the same idea, refined a bit. Just as described, good detail. Should do the job." - tsqgaman "....Design is easy to follow, materials were $41. Pleasure doing business. Thanks!" - ea_neal "...Very detailed instructions, fast delivery, great plans. What more can I say?" - theeyres If you're the least bit handy with everyday tools, you can build this custom rack to fit YOUR TRUCK and YOUR BOAT(S) and the best part is.... it won't pull the plug on your wallet! Here's what you need: A pickup with about 6" deep stake pockets about 1-1/2" x 2-1/4" in the four corners of the bed rail, and cleats or tie down anchors in the front and rear of the bed or bed wall. Some recent models or smaller trucks have eliminated or modified the pockets; this will not work for those applications. If you have a tonneau or bed cover covering the pockets, forget this plan. Your truck MUST HAVE OPEN, USEABLE STAKE POCKETS of the approximate size described, or this design will not work for you. No cleats or tiedowns? TELL ME WHEN YOU ORDER, and I'll include instructions on how to modify the design to work without bed cleats. Here's what you get: Material list, detailed instructions and drawings on what to buy, how to cut and assemble, and how to save on material. You won't go wrong. A few hours in the shop will produce a custom rack that looks good, works great, and will serve you for years. It's a no-hassle five minute install, pops out easily, and stores flat along a wall in the garage. I accept money orders by mail, and personal checks and credit cards with Paypal. Your plan set goes out First Class mail (USA only), with the next mail after payment is received. Email any questions before you buy. 10.50 - Firm 03/03/2009 |
